As in so many countries around the world, when COVID-19 broke out in Somalia, adolescent girls were among those worst impacted by the consequences of the pandemic and the measures to contain it. The closure of schools meant that not only were girls missing out on vital education, they were also at greater risk of Female Genital Mutilation, period poverty and decreased access to Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights services.
In May, over €138,000 was received from Plan International’s C-19 Response Fund to help address the protection needs of adolescent girls in internally displaced persons camps around the country. Thanks to this funding, Plan International Somalia, in collaboration with local partners, was able to distribute safe and reusable menstrual hygiene products to 3,500 adolescent girls, therefore reducing the stigma around menstruation.
