For children caught up in the conflict in Burkina Faso’s central and northern regions, it is a frightening, confusing and dangerous time. But for children living with a disability, the risks are increased, leaving them more susceptible to violence, poverty and exclusion.
Our inclusive child friendly spaces set up in camps for those displaced by the violence, support and facilitate the inclusion of vulnerable children with disabilities like Fatimata, 17, and Zourata, 16, who attend the centre most days. "With my friends, we love to play marbles, to dance and to tell stories. My friends support me! When I'm sick they come to see me," Fatimata says.
Around 770 children and adolescents take part in activities at our child friendly spaces in the city of Kongoussi, which is host to nearly 21,000 internally displaced persons, more than half of whom are under 14 years old. The project is run with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
