Adeng, 18, is expecting her first child after being married nearly a year ago, when she and her family were forced to flee their home in Lukwangole as a result of the conflict.
Before their village was first attacked last March, Adeng helped her aging mother look for food to feed the rest of the family. But when they were forced to leave their home in June and settle in Lokurmach, 11 hours away, it was decided Adeng would need to marry the man she had been promised to as a child, as her family needed the money from her dowry.
“I knew I would eventually get married, but if we had not been displaced, I would have held on because we were determined to send my siblings to school,” she explains. “My parents did not argue, because it is a normal occurrence that I was already booked by my husband and when the right time arrived, he would come for me.”
