Malnutrition is a major threat to children’s health and development in Niger. Stunting, which has significant consequences for a child’s survival and cognitive development, affects 42% of children in this land-locked country in the Sahel region according to data collected by UNICEF – which is one of the highest rates in the world.
Plan International is working alongside communities in Niger facing food insecurity to help strengthen their resilience and adapt to the changing climate. We have set up learning and nutrition centres where women can bring their children to have their weight checked and be screened for malnutrition, as well as learn healthy nutrition and childcare practices.
