Like many girls in Guatemala, Paulina has close family who have left to build a new life abroad. At the age of 16, she left herself for the US, after her father had an accident. “I went there for my future, to help my family,” she explains. After five months, however, she began to suffer from arthritis and unable to work or study, she decided to return home. Her brother and two sisters, however, remain in the US.
Today, Paulina, who lives with her parents, runs a shop where she makes and sells bread. She also earns additional income by sewing and keeping sheep, which allows her to invest in her shop. A Plan International Skills Training Programme for young people was critical in giving her the confidence to set up her livestock rearing business, she says.
“Plan International has supported me a lot with my self-esteem,” Paulina says. “I used to have depression, I didn't love myself. But they gave us training on self-esteem, and many other topics. Then I understood that I am worth a lot as a woman, which helped me a lot. After that I started my business.”
